Post Graduate Programme: "Cinema in Education: Theory and Creative Practices"

The course emphasizes the philosophical approach to the meaning of cinema and, from this perspective, its use to highlight the elements of morality that education must transmit to students of all levels. The value content of modern and classic film productions will be demonstrated so that it can become the subject of additional teaching through cinema. Film techniques and the specific film language will be used in the search for the interpretive method through philosophy and the systematic use of examples will function as a reinforcement of the theory.

At the end of the course, it is expected that students will be able to:

• use philosophical approaches to detect the moral part of cinema that can be used in education.
• recognize in the language of cinema those points that constitute carriers of ethics as a branch of philosophy, with the aim of applying them to educational practice.
• identify specific meanings in the language of cinema, which suggest to students and the film audience in general ways of acquiring morality.
• apply the ethical framework in the field of film production (film/documentary) in order to include good practices in the educational process.

The main thematic units of the course (each one or two weeks of teaching) are the following:

• Integration of philosophical theory into the film content
• Ethics and aesthetics
• The "Nicomachean Ethics" as a beacon of morality
• Ethics as a human privilege in cinema
• Promoting ethical behavior in cinema: utilitarian approach
• Promoting ethical behavior in cinema: the consequentialist concept
• Promoting ethical behavior in cinema: the Kantian categorical imperative
• The concept of moral duty in cinema
• Issues of bioethics in cinema
• The function of (cinematic) ethics and (cinematic) happiness
• Issues of ethics in film production
